KUCHING: There is a need to expand the present Sarawak Museum which is touted to be the best in South East Asia in the future, said Minister of Urban Development and Tourism Datuk Michael Manyin Jawong.
"We need a bigger building for our museum to cater to the increasing number of visitors. Our present one is getting too small. As we go by, we see our requirements. For now it is too premature for me to answer that question
(on whether we will have a bigger building for the museum).

"It can be a reality when we have the money. The money has to come from KL. We will think about it and put up a request maybe under the 10th Malaysia Plan," Manyin told reporters after launching an art exhibition entitled, "More than Colours" at the Arts Museum here yesterday.
He reiterated that if you really want
a good museum, ample space was needed, especially parking spaces for visitors. "Take for instance, the London Museum. One can spend
the whole day there.

On another issue, Manyin said local artists needed to be proactive and dare to venture out and explore the possibilities in bigger markets. Director of Sarawak Museum, Sanib Said, said the museum would continue to hold art exhibitions to attract more visitors. "As we are not charging any entrance fee to visitors to the Sarawak Museum, we have placed donation boxes at the entrance similar to some museums in western countries. This is so because if we start charging the visitors, then fewer people will want to visit the museum," he said. The art exhibition entitled, "More than Colours" is a solo exhibition by a Dutch abstract artist, Gerard Van Den Oetelaar. The exhibition is being held from October 23 until November 23. Meanwhile, Van Den Oetelaar said he had exhibited his works in the Museum of Modern Art, Moscow, Tula Art Museum, Russia and the Stadthuys in Malacca. "I don't mind to share my skills with the local artists," he said. Oetelaar had also donated two pieces of his creation to the Sarawak Museum valued at 5,000 Euro each.
